As a salaried individual, under EPF scheme, an employee has to pay a certain amount towards the scheme and an equal contribution is paid by the employer. The employee, on retirement, receives a lump sum amount including the self and the employer’s contribution with interest on both.

But many of us are in the dark about our EPF balance till a statement is sent by the employers at the end of the financial year.

Provident Fund (PF) account holders can check their balance with the EPFO through three major ways - the easiest of which includes a missed call and an SMS alerts. Other than that you can also download the government app Umang to know the PF details.

But according to the Ministry of Labour & Employment, employees are required to have their Universal Account Number (UAN) activated to know their PF balance via this service. A UAN, generated for every provident fund contributing member, acts as an umbrella for the multiple member IDs allotted to an individual by different organisations. The idea, therefore, is to link multiple Member Ids allotted to a single member under a single UAN.

Assuming you have the UAN and an SMS service activated on your mobile phone, this is how you can check your PF balance.
